House Remodeling Tricks

By Jim Dowd

Home remodeling can be a rewarding and satisfying experience. The work itself can be challenging, but the end results are well worth it. If the job requires precision work that you do not feel comfortable doing, it is best to hire a professional to be sure the job is done right. Research all of the aspects of your remodeling project to make sure you are getting the best deal possible.

Don't get in too deep with your remodeling job. You might have great ideas and a great master plan for your home, but there is more research and prep work in remodeling a bathroom or kitchen than you ever dreamed. Sometimes the handiest home owner can quickly be in over his or her head. Recognize your abilities and know your limitations. Plan on hiring professional help before starting a major bathroom renovation or you will find yourself in a crawl space realizing you aren't really a master electrician.

Safety is always primary and if you are not sure you can do something, you'll need to hire a professional for the home remodeling task or do some research on the topic. Be sure you have the appropriate tools on hand and don't take risks. If you're not sure about lifting the bathtub or climbing the ladder alone then you are likely taking a risk if you do it.

Be patient with your time line on your home remodeling projects. It might take a remodeling contractor only a couple of days to complete the same project you are trying to finish in a month, but remember professional remodeling contractors do these jobs every day. You should write down everything you want to accomplish and plan your work carefully. Time spent planning ahead of time will save you many hours in the long run when you end up doing the job twice because you left something out of your plan.

If you want to hire a professional for your remodeling project, always hire a licensed contractor. A licensed contractor will coordinate and construct projects that typically involve three or more subcontractor trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, roofing, or electrical work. In most states, contractors need a license to operate their business. Most contractors focus on major home remodeling projects and home additions, although you may find some contractors who will undertake a new home construction project or small remodeling projects.

  1. Always ask to see some kind of contractors licesence as well. With so many people claiming to be “workers” right now, it’s important now more than ever to have a contractors licesence.

    1. Very true, there are a lot of people claiming to be experienced carpenters/re-modelers to scam home owners, beware of who you are dealing with
